Assistant Professor of Economics
Dr. Hallan has a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Utah and an M.Sc. from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in Brazil. His research fields include monetary theory, history of economic thought (with an emphasis on classical political economy), and international finance. In his research he uses time series and qualitative methods to study structural asymmetries and hierarchies in contemporary global monetary and financial relations. He is also interested in how the philosophy of science can inform a critical understanding of the dominant paradigms and practices in mainstream economics.
He has taught Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Money and Banking, International Economics, Marxian Economics, and The History of U.S. Economic Development, as well as an original seminar he developed on the Hegemony of the U.S. Dollar. Pedagogically, he draws on Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, in which education is conceived as a practice of individual and social awareness-raising toward liberation.
