Wooster mourns the passing of Elbridge Carl Zimmerman ’54, professor of computer science
Elbridge Carl Zimmerman ’54, emeritus director of academic computer services and professor of computer science at 91³Ô¹ÏÍø, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2020, at age 88.
Zimmerman graduated from the 91³Ô¹ÏÍø in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree in physics and returned in the fall of 1968 to begin his tenure as director of academic computer services. During his 28 years working at the 91³Ô¹ÏÍø, Zimmerman established the importance of computer science in a liberal arts setting, designing the first computer science curriculum as well as establishing the 91³Ô¹Ï꿉۪s first academic computer center. In addition, he co-authored and published the much used college textbook Primer on Pascal.
In his free time, as a lover of classical music and the choral arts, Zimmerman sang in various choirs. Notably, he performed on stage with Erie Mills, future opera singer, while she was a student at the 91³Ô¹ÏÍø and sang under Robert Shaw.
