French and Francophone Film Series

WOOSTER, Ohio — 91�Թ���’s department of French and Francophone studies will host four acclaimed international films in Gault Recital Hall of Scheide Music Center (525 E. University St.). The film series, which is free and open to the public, will have English subtitles and refreshments will be served.
The first film “Faat Kiné,” will be shown on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. Filmmaker Ousamane Sembene sums up 40 years of path-breaking filmmaking with a penetrating analysis of the interplay of gender, economics, and power in today’s Africa. He accomplishes this through the deceptively light domestic drama of Faat Kiné, a gas station operator born, significantly, the same year as Senegalese Independence, 1960.
On Saturday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m., “Un Monstre à Paris (A Monster in Paris)” will be shown. In this animated family-friendly film, based in Paris during the great flood of 1910, a movie-mad cinema projectionist and his wisecracking buddy find themselves mixed up in an adventure involving a monster at-large in the city, which, turns out to be a gifted guitarist and nightclub musician.
The other two films will be shown next semester, starting Thursday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m., with “Frantz.” This film, which takes place shortly after World War I, stars Anna and Adrien, who she discovers at the grave of her late fiancé Frantz, a young German who was killed in the war.
The last film of the series, “Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis (Welcome to the Sticks),” will be shown Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m., and follows the life of Julie and her husband Philippe, who is banished to a distant unheard of town for trying to scam an inspector.
